And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I would like to know what's going on here. The man on the right is holding a short piece of wood, Don't think it's a gun stock. Broken paddle? Does the painting title say anything?
I am reading a book written by Clarance Hotchkiss. It is "The Whip Maker's Son" and it about his family back in the mid to late 1700 in pre- and post-colonial America and the settling of the wilderness of eastern New York. This painting looks like it came out of that book! And by the way, my paternal grandmother's maiden name was Hotchkiss.
